Anne

Based on Anne Hathaway Les Miserable promo image.

I feel the final image is not pushing as much as the sketch was when I just started. It's just one of the many small issues to work on. But I am proud, because I have actually colored something.

I'm hungry after painting...

Will stuff face now.

Good night!

Revisiting a familiar place

For warm up today, I am revisiting an old piece from when I was in Jason Scheier's class earlier this year.

The bathroom, it talks to me.

The wall pattern and the initial thumbnail.
WIP: experimenting with some colors.

Forgot to post this one.
So, we rented a nice house in AZ now that we have relocated, settling in and such.  One day in the guest bathroom, I notice the paint are like small blocks of paint.  Rather than flat wall, it is got these paint textures on it.  So naturally I look around also, because this part of Tucson have scorpions.  I've already found one the 3rd day I moved in, so I'm extra paranoid now days, I look everywhere, wall, floor, ceiling...

However on this one part of the wall, I saw this pattern in the paint job, back in TX, I used to do this with the marbling of the floor tiles, or the stubs on the ceiling.  So... I took a picture of it with my phone and this is what I came up with.

Values! Important no matter what subject matter it is...

More Albert Bierstadt studies

So, back late September during Industry Giants after party, I got to talk to some wonderful talented artists as well as industry guests.  Totally prepared, I shared my portfolio with them and received some very encouraging feedback.

One of the guests for the event was Jason Felix, I've only seen some of his works online prior to attending the event, and during his presentation, I was pretty hooked on his works (as well as his stage presence, it's not everyday where the concept designer actually dress in a complete ensemble. From accessories to shoes, to the delicate textile prints and facial hair trim, it was totally a character standing on the stage. It's SO nice!)

Anyhow, when he was browsing through my portfolio and stopped on the previously done Bierstadt studies, he asked me if I color picked the colors.  Well, for the previous 6 studies, I originally tried to come up with some kind of pallet, like a limit of 5-6 colors and try to figure out how to get the desired look.  I have totally over looked value!  The sad part was... I knew the importance of value and how the first step of composition is to make sure the value is well balanced.  Before, after I did the color, I would turn on the b/w filter to check value likeness.

So now, I am doing it differently, I'm turning b/w on first, and look at the original image with the filter and without the filter for a while, just to look at the relationships.  I remember in the class with Jason Scheier, he would talk about Nōta, he would often show us the light to dark/dark to light transitions using examples like Dylan Cole and his own works.  I know what I'm looking for now during these studies, this is a LOT harder than my initial approach.

Last minute works...

Leaving for Arizona to house hunt tomorrow, excited!
Before I go, decided to do a bit more work on some old projects from last year, and finalize some new pieces to add to portfolio.  Want to bring it with me for Industry Giants. :D always good to have it handy, I think.

  • Worked on a an old image/design

  •  Did a portrait of one of the 3 from above, but... with some tweaks.  2.5hrs

Recent works

So, the date's set, for my fiance and I to move to Arizona. It's starting to feel very real, thank goodness that TAD is online.

Originally I have applied to start classes this fall, but due to the move and financial situation, I have to re-apply for Spring.
Which is kind of a good thing too, this gives me a little bit more time to re-assemble my portfolio and present a better one.  From the previous portfolio review, the result was that I needed to do studies from not photographs but master works in addition to studies of real life subjects.

So as soon as the summer camps were over, I started to do some studies with various media and masterworks.  I think I'm really shifting now from just characters to really loving environments too.

Oh yeah. I also got to meet one of my idols in the illustration world.  Last year I found his book at the bottom of the barrel, and this year, he signed it for me.  Can't express how happy I am :)

Learning new tools: Watercolor figure sketch

Around the end of last year, I bought a small compact watercolor set.  It is small enough to fit into a purse so I can take it with me anywhere.  I decided to dig it out of the art material box (from the move) and experiment with it yesterday.

Summer has been quite busy, so I finally got some time to myself and do something I want to do.  So I wanted to do some figures and study how the values are on the figure.

I'm not very good at this media, it is still fairly new to me.  But I do enjoy experimenting and finding out how I like to use it.

The Magi

I said I was going to develop the characters I worked on couple days ago, and I did.  Although spent most of the time this weekend with family for the holidays, only partially done.  Non the less, it's good to get those creative juices flowing.

Happy Father's Day!

Week 8 - Analytical Figure Drawing 1 & Something personal

Last class! :( I'm going to miss it very much! Work have started to get a little bit busy due to lesson planning, but the worst is over.  Sadly I didn't have much time for homework, so I just did the forearm on top of the previous assignment that I did.

Summer is here now and I will not have time to take another class until fall.  But it feels good to have more time to do some personal works, feels good!  Golem thing started as a gorilla silhouette that was going to be for a project. but since that project never took off, I just turned it into a Golem.  I like the posture it had before, it seems kind of cute.  Thinking of developing more of both characters and color them or something this weekend.

Game Design Camp More stuff

I don't want to ruin the surprise, so I will just upload some environments for it.  I think the students will like the activity we came up with.

Game Design Camp

Our school will be hosting a Game design camp for middle school students in about 2 weeks.  We have planed this awesome activity for them to introduce them to game design documents. We decided on some cool theme ideas and are making illustrated cards so that the students can just stick the printed out cards onto a board.  The board is where they will draw out the layout of their level maps. :) It will be cool, and I enjoyed working on these cards.

Enjoy the rough sketches :)

Week 1 - Analytical Figure Drawing 1

Studies from life, photography, video and master artworks.
Master artwork studies are in digital, the rest are in traditional pencil and paper.  Definitely faster with the digital... or maybe because by then I've done 50 already :)

100/100 :)
Good Night!
